Our History

Our History

Half a century of turning ideas into products — from a garage in Edinburgh to a £20M contract electronics manufacturer with global reach.

Our Story

From founding engineers to a global manufacturer

Founded in 1975 by three Hewlett-Packard engineers, ZOT has spent five decades bridging the gap between invention and production — designing and building printed circuit boards, sheet metal enclosures and full electro-mechanical assemblies from our home in Musselburgh. This is how we grew.

1975

ZOT is started in a garage by Meyer Averbuch, Robin Cross and John Leask, who draw on their experience at Hewlett-Packard to transform the electronics manufacturing landscape in the United Kingdom.

First extension of the original building expands sheet metal fabrication capabilities to meet growing demand for ZOT’s unique services.

1988

ZOT leases an additional building at the existing location to accommodate growing interest in its services.

1995

Company growth and demand for quality manufacturing lead to a new, purpose-built sheet metal factory being constructed.

Alan Millar moves from PCB Manager to Sales Director to expand the business, and starts offshore PCB production.

2006

Buying the previously leased PCB building allows ZOT to build new PCB facilities on the same land and invest in new equipment and training.

2007

Continuous growth leads to a new, specialised electro-mechanical assembly division being built at the same Musselburgh location.
